EFT training overview

The International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) has a well-planned process for therapists to follow should they choose to train in EFT. With ICEEFT-endorsed trainers in over 30 countries, EFT training is popular the world-over. Therapists can train in EFT for couples (EFCT), EFT for individuals (EFIT) and EFT for families (EFFT).

Take your practice to another level!

Whether you assist individuals, families, couples or relationships of many configurations, EFT is a powerful model for increasing psychological balance within the individual and for building attachment security between those who are important to each other.
Here are 6 ways EFT Training can elevate your practice.

  1. Evidence-based

With a research base spanning over 30 years showing that EFT delivers, EFT is an evidence-based model, shown to improve relationship security and individual wellbeing.

  2. Deeply respectful

EFT is an experiential, humanistic model that is deeply respectful of all humans and their unique circumstances.

  3. Attachment science

EFT is based on attachment science, drawing from its rich model of human bonding and knowing the benefits of secure attachment for psychological wellbeing.

  4. Prioritise emotion

EFT prioritises emotion as a rich source of meaning, giving direction to a person’s life.

  5. Enabling connections

EFT is all about helping people to connect more fully with themselves and with those who matter most to them.

  6. Process-based

EFT is a process-based model with therapist interventions and clear markers of client change.

  • Like thousands of therapists around the world, come and discover the power of the EFT model in creating secure attachment in loving bonds. Viewing romantic love through the attachment lens, you will experience how EFCT creates moments of change and growth at the relational and individual level.

This experiential, attachment-based model prioritises emotions and shapes corrective emotional experiences that restructure the attachment bond. Witnessing change happen before your eyes is truly inspirational.

  • Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) is a groundbreaking therapeutic model that facilitates emotional processing and the creation of secure relationships with self and others.

Focusing on the primacy of emotion and the creation of a safe haven and secure base alliance, EFIT conceptualises health and dysfunction from an attachment perspective, identifying cycles of emotion regulation “within” and cycles of interpersonal relating “between.” Therapeutic change is experiential and revises working models of self and other.

  • EFT for families (EFFT) is a transformative approach that is foundational in helping parents and children who are struggling with remaining securely attached. EFFT guides families to resolve relationship blocks and promotes the development of secure familial bonds.

EFFT concentrates on specific practices for working through negative familial patterns by accessing and deepening emotional experience to promote corrective emotional experiences in family relationships.

Am I eligible to train in EFT?

In order to undertake training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, individuals, or families, you must be a mental health practitioner such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, social worker, or psychotherapist. You must have membership to an appropriate professional body (e.g. AHPRA, PACFA, ACA, AASW, RANZCP). School counsellors are permitted to attend if they belong to a professional body that has standards of practice for psychotherapy/counselling. Life coaches are not permitted to attend unless they also belong to one of the mental health professional categories listed above.

You can complete EFT training if you are currently studying for a mental health qualification (e.g. undergraduate or postgraduate student) and student discounts are available. For more information on eligibility for EFT training from ICEEFT click here.

How do I prepare for my EFT training?

To get the most from your EFT training, we recommend completing some pre-reading. Attachment Theory in Practice: Emotionally Focused Therapy for Individuals, Couples and Families (Johnson, 2019) and Becoming an EFT Therapist: The Workbook (Furrow et al, 2022) are excellent foundational texts for all EFT modalities (EFCT, EFIT and EFFT).

  • If you are attending an Externship in EFCT, we recommend reading the latest edition of The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection (Johnson, 2019).
  • If you are attending EFIT training, we recommend reading A Primer for Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) (Johnson and Campbell, 2021).
  • If you are attending EFFT training, we recommend reading Emotionally Focused Family Therapy: Restoring Connection and Promoting Resilience (Furrow et al, 2019).

What are the differences in the training events in EFT for couples & EFT for individuals?

If you are thinking about doing some training in EFT, you will soon see that you can train in EFT for couples (EFCT), families (EFFT) or individuals (EFIT). Many people decide to complete training in more than one EFT modality, which can be beneficial as the courses build on each other, but most people like to know the best place to start.

Clare recommends starting with the modality you work most with, for instance, if you see more individuals, then training in EFIT might be most helpful to you, if you see more couples and relationships, then training in EFCT will be of far more use to you and your clients. Obviously, if you see more families, then training in EFFT will be most beneficial. It can also help to think about which modality you could do with more guidance on or where you feel you want the most growth.

Clare offers EFT training in EFT for couples (EFCT) and individuals (EFIT). If you see both couples and individuals and would like help with both, you can certainly take both training pathways but if you’d like to start with one, Clare recommends starting with EFT for couples because she finds that this is likely to enhance your individual work because the skills seem to more transferable to individual work. For those who take EFIT training but also work with couples, the EFIT training will not cover some of the really important factors to consider when working with relationships like assessing for safety, managing escalation, working with a sexual cycle, or managing broken trust (attachment injuries).

Can I count my EFT training as professional development?

APS, PACFA and ACA members can accrue Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours by participating in CPD activities that they determine to be relevant to their individual professional skills learning plans and goals. These may be self-initiated. CPD activities do not need to be endorsed by the APS, PACFA or the ACA. Please retain your receipt of registration and your certificate of completion to prove attendance for your professional body.

Do you offer scholarships?

EFT trainer Clare Rosoman is dedicated to making EFT accessible for all therapists and for all human relationships. She is committed to embracing diversity in the EFT community and expanding the reach of EFT into under-served or marginalised groups, especially in Australia. In line with this commitment, Clare offers several reduced-rate and scholarship options to make training in EFT accessible for therapists who might encounter barriers in accessing EFT training and for those providing EFT to under-served groups.

  1. 100% Diversity & Equity Scholarships: Clare offers one no-fee place per core training event (Externship in EFCT, Core Skills in EFCT, Essentials of EFIT and EFIT Mastering Skills) for therapists who have a lived-experience of marginalisation and who have found the cost or other factors to be a barrier to accessing EFT training. Applications are welcomed from therapists who meet this criteria and priority will be given to those who work with clients from marginalised groups in Australia.
  2. 50% Mentoring Scholarships: Clare also offers 1-2 places per core training (Externship in EFCT, Core Skills in EFCT, Essentials of EFIT, and EFIT Mastering Skills) as a partial scholarship for those who are passionate about bringing EFT to under-served or marginalised groups in the Australian EFT community. These scholarship places include a 50% fee-reduction on the registration fee for the training event. Clare sees this as her way of supporting and mentoring therapists who are keen to expand the reach of EFT into under-served groups and communities in Australia.
  3. Students & those in financial hardship: students enrolled in a course of study in the field of mental health such as psychology, counselling, social work etc. can apply for a student discount upon proof of enrolment. Those in financial hardship can also apply for a fee reduction but these applications are taken on a case-by-case basis and depend on numbers of scholarships/mentoring places already being given at each training event.

Scholarship terms and conditions:

  • A small number of scholarship places are allocated per calendar year.
  • Our diversity and equity scholarships and mentoring scholarships are only offered for the following courses: Externship in EFCT, Basic Core Skills in EFCT, Essentials of EFIT, and EFIT Mastering Skills.
  • All scholarship places are valid for the current calendar year and cover attendance at the named event at the applicable rate according to the level of scholarship awarded (i.e. Diversity and equity scholarship = 100% of the fee covered; Mentoring scholarship = 50% of the full fee covered).
  • Scholarships are not transferable to another participant or across calendar years.
