EFFT therapist training pathway
1. Essentials of EFFT
An ICEEFT-endorsed EFFT Essentials training is the introductory 24-hour course in Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), paving the way towards certification. This workshop equips therapists with the tools to navigate and mend familial emotional landscapes, fostering the restoration of family bonds. Participants will delve into attachment frameworks and experiential realms, explore emotion regulation, and learn practical EFFT steps to facilitate corrective emotional experiences. Completion of EFFT Essentials provides therapists with the tools to drive lasting positive change in the family dynamics of their clients.
EFFT Essentials is equivalent to EFFT Level 1 + EFFT Level 2.
2. EFFT Mastering Skills
Beginning in 2024, advance your practice and improve your client outcomes by taking your EFFT skills to the next level! In this two-part course (10hrs), you will learn from expert trainers as they show and talk about their therapy sessions – where they get stuck, how they get unstuck, and how the attachment map and EFT Tango provide a beacon for the family therapist. Next, you will join with your colleagues as they show their work, and watch as expert trainers help guide the therapy process through feedback, consultation, and role plays specifically aimed at framing clients’ problems through the lens of attachment, mapping the process, maintaining momentum, unblocking barriers to caregiving, and more!
Prerequisite:
Proof of completion of Essentials of EFFT training with an ICEEFT Certified EFT Trainer must be provided in order for a participant to be eligible to enroll in an EFFT Mastering Skills course.
3. EFFT additional training
Completing 6hrs of additional training in EFFT via approved videos or workshops forms the final training requirement for eligibility for Certification as an EFFT Therapist with ICEEFT. These focus on areas of special interest such as, working with shame, trauma or grief and loss and can be done at any stage after completing Essentials of EFFT.

Frequently Asked Questions about EFFT
Can I train in EFFT?
In order to undertake training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, individuals, or families, you must be a mental health practitioner such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, social worker, or psychotherapist. You must have membership to an appropriate professional body (e.g. AHPRA, PACFA, ACA, AASW, RANZCP). School counsellors are permitted to attend if they belong to a professional body that has standards of practice for psychotherapy/counselling. Life coaches are not permitted to attend unless they also belong to one of the mental health professional categories listed above.
You can complete EFT training if you are currently studying for a mental health qualification (e.g. undergraduate or postgraduate student) and student discounts are available. For more information on eligibility for EFT training from ICEEFT click here.
How do I prepare for my EFFT training?
To get the most from your EFFT training, we recommend completing some pre-reading. Attachment Theory in Practice: Emotionally Focused Therapy for Individuals, Couples and Families (Johnson, 2019) and Becoming an EFT Therapist: The Workbook (Furrow et al, 2022) are excellent foundational texts for all EFT modalities (EFCT, EFIT and EFFT). If you are attending EFFT training, we recommend reading Emotionally Focused Family Therapy: Restoring Connection and Promoting Resilience (Furrow et al, 2019).
Where do I access training in EFFT?
